Republican Women Prisoners
Marie Wright was born in Belfast on 20th October 1960. Due to the political unrest in the early 1970s, she, like many within her community, became involved in the republican movement. After leaving school at the age of 16 she worked in a variety of jobs and then, in 1983 was arrested, charged with possession of explosives and sentenced to 7 years in 1995. She was released in 1987 and in 1989, was rearrested, charged with attempted murder and sentenced to 24 years. She is currently pursuing an Honours degree course through the Open University and will graduate in 1999. She is also involved in other forms of education and has a keen interest in the Irish language and woodwork. She is due to be released in June 2001.
